Search Engine Optimization also known as SEO is not something that is a simple one time job. The content found on your web site is important, and keeping the information recent and updated is important. Let’s face it, although this is not always the easiest thing to do, one good rule of thumb is to take at least 20 – 30 minutes a day to devote to working on your web site.
With the first immersions of search engines it was simple to make a web site SEO compliant. All you had to do was make sure you had keywords in your Meta tags and that those keywords appeared 8 – 10 times in the content and that was it. That is no longer the case. Search engines have evolved determine the layout, coding, content, grammar and much more in a web site.
Here are a few important keys:
- Web analytics - You’ll need web analytics software in place so you can track what’s working and what’s not. For starters you can use Google Analytics for free.
- Include a site map page – Create a valid XML site map, include the search engine in the robot file the name and location. Submit to all and any search engines that will accept it, for the most part this is free.
- SEO-friendly URLs – When we say SEO friendly URLs, this mean if the page is about “Phoenix Classic Car Shop”, don’t call the page car.html rather call it phoenix-classic-car-shop.html. Remember hyphens are treated as space by search engines.
- If you’re on a tight budget, use the free versions of Keyword Discovery or WordTracker, both of which also have more powerful paid versions. Ignore the numbers these tools show; what’s important is the relative volume of one keyword to another.
- Create great, unique content – Remember write the content on your web site for your users not the search engines. Search engines are now very intelligent in comparison to old days.
